Halloween is upon us, and with it comes an affinity for all things creepy… and creepy crawly. In addition to pumpkins, ghosts, and ghouls, we often decorate our homes with oversized sparkly spiders and giant spiderwebs.
In addition to a neighborhood full of spider-themed holiday decorations, you may be seeing more real, live spiders than usual. Is there a reason we seem to see more spiders in the fall?
Are Spiders More Common in Fall?
If it feels like there are more spiders in fall, it may just be a matter of perception. Because spiders are at their full adult size by fall, they are large enough to be easily seen by the human eye.
Additionally, spiders tend to be increasingly active in autumn. Meaning they are less secluded than in other months. Fall is the most common time of year for homeowners to discover they have a spider infestation on their property or in their house.
What Months Are Spiders Most Active?
While it’s commonly assumed that there is a “spider season” in late summer and early fall, spiders are active year-round. You are, however, more likely to see them during this time of year… and not just because of their larger size. There are other reasons you find more spiders from late August through early November.
Why Are Spiders So Active in Fall?
There are two primary causes for increased spider encounters in the fall: They’re looking for shelter, and they’re looking for a mate. Like other creatures in regions with cold winters, spiders look for a warm place to nest – preferably close to sources of food and water. This is why you often see spiders in your yard or garden in the autumn months.
Fall is also spider mating season. So, you will see them more often as they leave their safe, dark corners to find a mate.
Do Spiders Lay Eggs in Fall?
Various spider species lay eggs throughout the year – with peaks in the spring and again in the fall. Baby spiders typically hatch when the weather is warm. Those that hatch in cool or cold temperatures remain in their egg sac until conditions are more hospitable.
